With the Redskins’ season being ostensibly over like it is, and drawing near the Christmas holiday, I thought that a break from the rigors of a non-playoff season was in order. For those of you regulars to The Cheap Seats, you will see that this is not the normal stuff.
Christmas has always been my favorite time of the year, even now as a 30-year-old; I still get as excited for Christmas as I did when I was a child.
My Christmas list (even now) always had a strong football flavor. There was always a request for an official NFL football, jerseys, uniforms and a plethora of football games. While I am still waiting for the official NFL football (maybe this year?), over the years I have received most of the other “wanted” items.
I have my personal favorites that I have gotten for Christmas and I would like to share them with you, my friends.
Some of these items may show my age and others may make you smile. Either way, enjoy them and have a great holiday.
#6 – Bart Starr’s Pro Football
This was a classic. It was the first board game that you could actually call plays and be the coach.
I simulated an entire season during a Christmas vacation the year I got it. I still remember the Steelers beat the Saints in the first Super Bowl played in my bedroom.
#5 – Tecmo Bowl I and II
This was and still is the greatest set of football video games ever made. They were made for the original Nintendo system.
I remember the year that I got Tecmo Bowl II, my brother and I opened it before Christmas and played it, and put it back without the parents ever knowing.
#4 – NERF Football
Along with this wonderful toy, came the advent of indoor football. That changed the lives of so many of us.
#3 – Sports JOCK Field Goal Kicker
Remember this one?
He was a big yellow guy, that you had to whack on the head and he would slam huge field goals. We used this in conjunction with indoor football.
#2 – Football I and II
Quite possibly a gift from the football gods. I still have the originals and I see them now at Wal Mart as well.
I can still remember my brother cheating at this game. These games have truly withstood the test of time.
And the undisputed number one……
#1 – Electric football
Yes. Every kid wanted this game. I still have the “grass” field that looks like a practice field and the Redskins from when I was a kid.
The greatest thrill was playing on the Super Bowl field with the cardboard crowd and working lights. This game alone, caused more obsessive-compulsive disorders than any other activity known to man. It would take twice as long to set the players in position, than it did to run the play.
It was great!!
I still play it today. Thank you Tudor for this wonderful gift.
That is my list folks. I am sure you all have others that you would add. Thanks for allowing me to share it with you and feel free to email me your favorites as well.
Be sure to come back to The Cheap Seats next week………
