Injuries Continue to Add Up for Skins’ Defense

News Washington Commanders

While being helped off the field during the first quarter of Sunday night’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, Redskins safety Matt Bowen was hoping his right knee was not too severely damaged. His hopes didn’t come true. Bowen was diagnosed with a tear of his right anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, which will require season-ending surgery. He was placed on inured reserve on Tuesday.

Safety Andre Lott has missed the last two games but it appears he will start in Bowen’s place against the Chicago Bears alongside Sean Taylor, who Lott started ahead of during the first two games. Backup safety Ryan Clark, who replaced Bowen during Sunday’s loss to the Ravens, strained his ankle later in the game. It appears he will be available to play this Sunday against the Chicago Bears. To add depth to the safety position, the Redskins signed safety Pat Dennis, who was selected by Kansas City in the 5th round of the 2000 NFL Draft.

Linebacker LaVar Arrington, who hasn’t played a game since week 2 against the New York Giants due to a knee injury, is currently listed as questionable. With the passing of his 17-year old cousin, Joseph, over the weekend, LaVar has a newfound motivation that will overshadow any pain his knee will give him, so don’t be surprised to see him return against the Bears. Fellow linebacker Mike Barrow has not appeared in any games this season due to tendonitis in his left knee. Barrow’s knee is gradually improving but he is listed as doubtful for this Sunday’s game.

Former Bears defensive end Phillip Daniels, who also hasn’t played since week 2 due to a groin strain, was originally expected to miss 2-4 weeks. He had hoped to return this Sunday to play against his former team but he suffered a setback and will miss several more weeks.

Defensive tackle Joe Salave’a suffered a strain in the back of his knee against the Ravens. He is day-to-day. Cornerback Shawn Springs was bothered by tendonitis in his left ankle last week but still played against the Baltimore Ravens and intercepted the first pass of his Redskins career. Springs is expected to be limited in practice leading up to Sunday.
