The Washington Redskins signed 8-year veteran cornerback Artrell Hawkins on Thursday, adding depth to a group that includes Shawn Springs, Walt Harris, and 1st round pick Carlos Rogers.
Hawkins was selected in the second round of the 1998 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals out of the University of Cincinnati.
He spent the first 6 seasons of his career as a member of the Bengals, totaling 384 tackles, 9 interceptions, 1 touchdown, 3 sacks, and 54 passes defended.
He joined the Carolina Panthers as a free agent prior to the 2004 season. He was beset by a knee injury during training camp.
In 2004, Hawkins collected 26 tackles, 1 interception, and 4 passes defended in 14 games. He was released by the Panthers in March after signing a three-year deal the previous offseason.
Throughout his career, Hawkins has been a solid cornerback but he is also a valuable contributor on special teams.
Hawkins worked out for team officials before mini-camp began last week.
