2007 Results: 13-4, lost to Giants in Divisional Playoff Game
2008 Projected Cap Status: $227,212 over the cap
2007 Season Recap:
The Dallas Cowboys first season under Wade Phillips had a spectacular beginning, the team roared out of the gates, posting a 5-0 record behind the stellar play of quarterback Tony Romo. Romo threw for over 4,000 yards and tossed 36 touchdowns, silencing any questions about a hangover from his infamous botched snap.
The Cowboys offense was potent; it ranked third in yards per game, second in total points and had the second most plays of 20 yards or more (56) trailing only New England (57). The team’s ground attack was not quite as explosive, ranking 17th in rushing yards and 10th in rushing touchdowns.
The defense ranked ninth overall, 13th against the pass and sixth versus the run. The team was tied for fourth in interceptions and had the third most sacks.
Yet it all went for naught as the Cowboys struggled badly down the stretch, dropping three of their last four games, including (and finally) losing to the eventual Super Bowl champs. The team holds the 28th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.
Running back – Julius Jones departed for Seattle in the off-season so the team needs a capable backup for Marion Barber. The team is currently negotiating an extension with Barber, a restricted free agent.
Wide receiver – Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton had very solid seasons but the team could use another reliable wideout to force teams to play more one-on-one coverage.
Corner – The team’s trade for suspended Titans CB Pacman Jones has finally gone through after months of public pursuit, indicating that the team considers this a position of need. The acquisition of Jones only helps if he’s re-instated, so the need is hardly met.
