Team Needs: New York Giants

By Fios | April 25th, 2008

2007 Results: 14-6, Super Bowl Champions
2008 Projected Cap Status: $6,156,960 under the cap

2007 Season Recap:

The New York Giants 2007 season simply defied expectations. The team lost its first two games then rallied to go 10-4 the remainder of the season. They struggled at home, going 2-5, but lost only once on the road, dropping the season opener and then rattling off 11 straight road wins, culminating in the upset of the New England Patriots.

The team’s offense was something of a Jekyll and Hyde act. The rushing attack was very good, ranking fourth in total yardage and seventh in points. The offensive line allowed only 28 sacks, good for 10th best. However, the team was 21st in passing yards, 23rd in completions, only five teams threw more interceptions and Eli Manning had the second-worst completion percentage in the league.

In terms of yards allowed per game, the Giants defense was eighth against the run and 11th against the pass. The team struggled some to keep teams out of the end zone, allowing 355 total points, 17th in the league. The team – as New England discovered – excelled in the pass rush, leading the league with 53 sacks and getting another eight in the post-season, including five in the Super Bowl. The Giants hold the 31st overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Team Needs:

Linebacker – Kawika Mitchell signed with Buffalo while fellow starter Reggie Torbor departed for Miami. The team signed veteran Danny Clark but obviously needs help at this position.

Wide receiver – Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer have age and injury concerns that will force the team to look for some youth.

Offensive line – The Giants have a solid, veteran group of starters but are in need of depth and youth.
