Today’s Storyline

Goals, Goals, Goals – It is still early in the NHL season and the sample size of three games is relatively small, but the Capitals are scoring goals, lots of goals. The Caps have scored at least four goals in every game and have 13 tallies on the year, which ranks second in the league. The New York Rangers have 16 goals, but have also played two more games than the Capitals. Washington ’s average of 4.33 goals per game tops the league. What is perhaps even more impressive is that eight different Caps have scored at least once. Last season Alex Ovechkin scored a higher percentage of his team’s goals than any other NHL player (27.3%) and had a hand in more of his team’s goals than any other player (47.1%). This season Ovechkin has two points (2g), while the team has accumulated 34. Only two active skaters, defensemen Shaone Morrisonn and John Erskine, have yet to tally a point this year. Even goaltender Jose Theodore has gotten into the scoring mix, as he assisted on an Ovechkin goal.
