The Washington Redskins were using a tackle as a guard and a former linebacker as a backup running back, another player who started at right guard ended up playing center, he was replaced by a guy that couldn’t make the game day roster for a month because he only plays left guard, he was later replaced by a backup tackle. The makeshift line helped the Redskins post season highs of 465 total yards, 32 first downs and 40:09 time of possession. They started the game without two starting defensive backs and lost two starting linebackers during the game and still held the Titans without an offensive touchdown.
After shuffling the lineup for most of the game on Sunday, Monday the Redskins needed to shuffle their roster in a attempt to have enough healthy players to get through practice this week. Safety LaRon Landry and running back Ryan Torain were all but ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Vikings by coach Mike Shanahan. Shanahan also announced that running back Chad Simpson and safety Anderson Russell were added to the season-ending injured reserve list, and running back James Davis was signed to the active roster to fill Simpson’s spot.
On Tuesday the team filled the spot left by Russell by signing former Virginia Tech defensive back Victor “Macho” Harris. Harris was a fifth-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009 at cornerback, but the Eagles converted him to safety where he played in 15 games and started eight as a rookie. After Philadelphia moved him back to cornerback during the off-season, Harris failed to make the final roster. Later in the day the Seattle Seahawks signed offensive tackle Will Robinson from the Redskins practice squad onto their 53-man roster and the Redskins filled the spot by signing guard/tackle Jacob Bender. Bender was selected in the sixth round of the 2007 draft by the New York Jets and appeared in two games. In 2008, he signed with the San Francisco 49ers, where he worked under current Redskins offensive line coach Chris Foerster. Most recently Bender, has been playing guard for the UFL’s Hartford Colonials.
The Redskins also announced the signing running back Kestahn Moore to the practice squad on Tuesday, in a move to fill the opening that was created when running back James Davis was promoted to the 53-man roster. The former Florida standout signed with Denver as a undrafted free agent in April of 2009 but was cut, the Kansas City Chiefs signed him in December but then cut him before the 2010 season started.
Running back Clinton Portis tore an abdominal muscle Sunday not just re-injuring the groin as first thought and must undergo surgery, this has forced the Redskins to assign him to season-ending injured reserve for the second time in two years. To fill his spot on the team’s active roster they added free agent running back Andre Brown. Brown who spent parts of the this season with the Denver Broncos, Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts, was a fourth-round draft pick in the 2009 by the New York Giants, but has appeared in only three NFL games. He spent all of last season on the Giants’ injured reserve list. Brown played his college ball at N.C. State.
At practice on Wednesday linebacker Lorenzo Alexander (hamstring), defensive end Jeremy Jarmon (hamstring), safety LaRon Landry (Achilles), linebacker Rocky McIntosh (thigh) and running back Ryan Torain (hamstring) did not participate, while receiver Brandon Banks (knee), guard Derrick Dockery (knee), defensive lineman Kedric Golston (elbow/groin), guard Artis Hicks (thigh), receiver Santana Moss (knee), center Casey Rabach (knee) and cornerback Carlos Rogers (hamstring) were all trying to work through their injuries.
