Return Of The Cheap Seats

Football Is Back, And So Am I

Aside from winning the Super Bowl, hoisting the Lombardi Trophy over one’s head and uttering the famous line, “I am going to Disney World,” there are few stronger football emotions than the feeling we all got when the announcement was made, “Football is back”.  I always laughed at the notion of “Christmas in July,” until I realized that the announcement that the NFL lockout was over, was made on July 25th.  The only thing that would have made it better, would have been Roger Goodell and DeMaurice Smith squaring off in an MMA octagon, so that will have to remain on the Christmas list.

No matter, football is back and I couldn’t be happier.  My Sundays in the fall that once looked to be filled with visits to Lowes and The Home Depot will once again be filled with what God intended them to be filled with… football.

OK, I admit watching Jeff Saturday paw all over Robert Kraft toed some lines that made guys wonder if it was wrong to feel so damn good about watching two dudes hugging on TV.  But as much as I hate the Patriots, I wanted to hug Mr. Kraft too.  I will sound horrible when I say that the man love I would show him, had less to do with the passing of his wife and more to do with his involvement in bringing NFL football back to the masses.

I think we all believed that we would have NFL football this year, but with each passing day the thought of Sundays without football, slowly crept into our minds.  College football is great and it certainly has its place in the hearts of many including myself, but Sundays in the fall were made for NFL football.

With the return of football comes all the excitement of the offseason.  The signings, the releases, the trades and of course, the speculation and prognostication fill the airwaves and create a stir.  With the lockout costing the teams and agents the normal time they would have to negotiate and do the “dollar dance”, everything about this offseason has been at break-neck speed.  It’s like having an entire season of “Lost” crammed into a one hour show.  Don’t blink or you will miss something.  I secretly yearn that someone should have come up with a better scorecard for this offseason to keep track of all the transactions that hit the wire – it’s been so fast and furious that it has been difficult to follow.

These next few weeks of training camp and the continued reconstruction of our beloved Redskins may in fact prove to be more exciting than the season itself, but right now all fans of all teams believe they can win the Super Bowl.

On a hot summer day with a cold Mike’s Limeade in my hoof, that’s good enough for me.

  1. Simply awesome to see the return of The Cheap Seats – and even more awesome to welcome back the man that is responsible for them.

  2. Great start to the Redskins season having Wingman back at THN. Always one of the more enjoyable blogs to read. Looking forward to once again reading that which is the unique wit and wisdom of Les. Welcome Back to THN.

  3. Thanks for the warm welcome back. We just opened camp with my son’s football team so “busy” has taken on a whole new meaning. Amped for the Redskins to start playing and see if the overhaul pays off the way we all hope.
