THN on The B-Mitch Tailgate Show

Washington Commanders

Last night I was fortunate enough to make my first appearance on Brian Mitchell’s new Tailgate Show. If you’re not familiar with the show, please check out my blog from when THN’s own Bobby Johnson was on the show a few weeks ago.

Brian Mitchell has been coming by this website for a few years, and was interacting with the fan base here, before Twitter, before Facebook, before players actually interacted with the fans. I have always been very appreciative of the fact that he did so, and I have always tried to reciprocate that support wherever I could.

As a Redskin fan, I consider myself very fortunate to be able to talk football with the guy that holds down the number two spot on the all-time, all-purpose yards list. Ever thought about the fact that B-Mitch has more than 13 miles of NFL yardage before? I did, before I went on the show last night.

We ran into some technical difficulties, difficulties that were mine, and I didn’t think I was going to end up being on the show. I was able to rectify my situation, and Brian’s crew Matt and Ben, the guys that make the show happen, were gracious enough to slide me into the final segment (my apologies if I bumped the other guys time because of it).

The show was a round table discussion, so me not being available for the first part of the show, could have meant me being on the show another night, rather than disrupting the flow of last night’s show. At least that’s what I thought, but these guys are professionals.

The first part of the show was @MrDCSports @JimmyBeamVA and @rd421 talking Skins with Brian. All of them did a great job, and I think Brian put together another panel of very knowledgeable Redskins fans. I won’t get into the specifics of the show, because I want you to read this blog, and then click on the link at the bottom and watch it for yourself.

At some point in their discussions, I sorted out my technical issues and was able to get through to the show properly. When you watch the show, you’ll see that… well you won’t actually see anything… that’s the point I’m going to make… the crew rolled with the punch, put the first three guys in the first two sets, and then had me on in the third after I had got through. Real classy for Ben and Matt to still put me on because they both knew that I was grateful and excited to be on the show.

My segment was with @RevRedskin. Familiar with the cat? Well if you aren’t then check him out, dude’s a trip. I’m not going into any details about my segment, again, watch it and see for yourself. But it consists of all-time, all-purpose, yardage stud, and Redskins legend Brian Mitchell, asking little old ME, questions about the Washington Redskins. Please stop and think about the uniqueness of that for one moment. Really… stop… take in a deep breath… and pause on that exact reflection for long enough to give it the merit that it deserves.

We live in an exciting sports time, one where a sports fan can interact with athletes on a more personal level than ever before through Twitter and through Facebook, but tell me, who else is doing what Brian is doing? What other athletes are out there interviewing the FANS as the basis for an entire show? Brian is a professional, and a busy one at that, but this show is HIS. He doesn’t do it because he agreed to do it for someone, it’s HIS show. It’s shot in HIS house. He’s doing it because he thinks it is something that Redskins Nation will enjoy. He is taking that level of fan interactivity to a whole different level because of the dynamic of him interviewing the fans, and not the other way around.

It’s radical and quite revolutionary, really. If you don’t see it, look harder.

I consider myself someone who bleeds burgundy and gold as hard as anybody. It’s taken a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, supporting this website for nearly ten years. It means a lot to me, to have someone who could teach me a million things about a game I know pretty well, consider my opinion about the Washington Redskins worthy of asking. By no means am I alone in my quest to feed Redskins fans with my own opinion on anything Redskins – there are many of us, and there are many that do a very good job of covering the world of the Washington Redskins. Brian’s show is about putting those individuals in the limelight, as opposed to the athletes that are already in the limelight.

If you don’t see that as bold, if you don’t see that as risk-taking, if you don’t see that as incredible for Redskins fans, you’re looking at it through a completely different set of eyes than I am.

I hope you’ll both check out, and enjoy the show.

Hail!

  1. Yeah I thought the ‘both’ was awkward, but checked and it is correct grammar since the both refers to ‘checking out’ AND ‘enjoying’ the show. But thanks for busting my testicles bro, appreciate it, cuz I know that means you’re reading it, and reading it intently enough to notice things! Hail brother!

  2. Is there a link to the video somewhere? I poked around the site, but couldn’t seem to find it. Thanks!

  3. Doh! It’s the video that plays on the homepage when you load the site! (Didn’t have my headphones on in time to catch that it was the video.
