Here’s a quick look at what’s going on at Redskins Park today:
Kareem Moore practiced…
… his 6 weeks on the PUP list are up, and while the Redskins didn’t make a roster move to bring him off the PUP list, Coach Mike Shanahan did say that Moore could be activated very soon. Washington actually has 21 days to integrate him back into the 53-man roster, but given the injury concerns to Oshiomoho Atogwe, Moore will definitely be on the fast track.
The fourth year free safety has been on the shelf since late in 2010 when he was put on the injured reserve list with a knee injury. Before the injury, Moore enjoyed his best season in the NFL starting 12 games, and posting career bests in tackles (63), and passes defended (5). The 27-year old’s knee injury carried over to the 2011 preseason, and the Redskins put him on the Physically Unable to Perform list, rather than waste a roster slot, or lose him for the entire season. Wednesday was the first time he has practiced with the team since the injury, so being thrust into action against the Buffalo Bills this week seems unlikely. Still, keep an eye on Atogwe’s injury to see if there’s a need for Moore to be pressed into action.
Dominique Byrd was signed at tight end…
… to fill a void created by Chris Cooley’s move to the injured reserve list. Other than a game earlier this season with the Seattle Seahawks, Byrd hasn’t played in the NFL since being released by the St. Louis Rams in 2007. Byrd was drafted by the Rams in 2005 out of USC, where he played with Fred Davis, and he has played in 15 NFL games in his career. He has 63 yards on 6 receptions, and one touchdown. Of Byrd, Shanahan said, “He’s an athlete.”
Jonathan Compas was signed at guard/center…
… filed in the ‘lesser known or cared about, but potentially important news’ category, the Redskins added Compas to their roster on Wednesday. With two games of NFL experience, it’s not really known what he brings to the table, but Shanahan said that, “(He’s) A guy who could play center or guard. We liked the way he played in the preseason when he was with New England.” With Kory Lichtensteiger’s season ending abruptly last week, and rookie Maurice Hurt being promoted from the practice squad to the active roster as the only back-up interior lineman, some sort of roster move was to be expected. Compas was signed by the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2009, and has spent time with the Raiders, the Bucs, and most recently this preseason with the Patriots.
Rex Grossman was released…
… from local hospital today. Grossman was admitted with pneumonia like symptoms over the weekend, but he is expected to be back at Redskins Park tonight. No word yet on whether or not he’ll be fit to back-up Beck on Sunday.
Injury Updates…
… obviously Trent Williams not practicing yet, but London Fletcher and DeAngelo Hall didn’t practice today either. Fletcher is nursing a hamstring injury, but is still hoping that he can heal up in time for Sunday. Atogwe, Byron Westbrook and Donte Stallworth all practiced today, but were limited. Grossman obviously didn’t practice either.
Practice Squad Shuffle
Everybody was watching the practice squad roster today to see if RB Evan Royster was elevated to the 53-man to account for the season-ending injury to Tim Hightower. Instead, the Redskins ADDED a running back to the practice squad, signing Tristan Davis. Guard John Malecki was released to make room for Davis, and Royster remains on the practice squad as well. Presumably the Redskins will just go with Ryan Torain and Roy Helu at running back, but fullback Darrel Young could also fill in if need be.
