Victory Monday: Commanders Snatch Win From Broncos

The Washington Commanders victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday was a bit if an anomaly. Why? Because Washington haven’t opened a season at 2-0 since the Occupy Wall Street movement.

That’s right, they haven’t won their first two regular season games since 2011.

It was a very tight game. Perhaps more poignantly, it definitely didn’t look like it was going to happen for at least half of the game. In fact, it almost fell through at the last moment as well.

Of One’s Own Free Will, That’s What Voluntary Means

The Offseason Training Activities (OTAs) are voluntary. It’s amazing how many people seem to forget that. It’s written into the Collective Bargaining Agreement for a reason. That agreement is intended to strike a balance between players and owners – and to hopefully be a fair compromise for both parties.

Voluntary is supposed to mean of one’s own free will.

In Washington, voluntary seems to mean, of one’s own free will that toes the corporate line.

Washington Commanders OTA News And Notes

The Washington Commanders began their Organized Team Activities (OTAs) this week with practices on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. It is the first time in the offseason that rookies and veterans are permitted to come together. After finishing last in the NFC East in 2022, and proclaiming second year quarterback Sam Howell as the starting quarterback in the offseason, there is a lot to work on.

Daron Payne Gets Slapped With The Franchise Tag

The Washington Commanders became the first team in the National Football League to use the franchise tag this offseason. They placed the nonexclusive franchise tag on Daron Payne, which will hopefully keep him around for at least the 2023 season. The tag is worth a few Big Macs short of $19 million ($18.937), and will become fully guaranteed when he signs it.

The move comes just the day after the Commanders cleared almost $30 million from the cap books by releasing quarterback Carson Wentz and defensive back Bobby McCain. The team is projected to have approximately $35 million available, less the value of Payne’s tag.

Chase Young Will Start Against The Browns This Week

Last week, Chase Young got back to doing what he loves – playing football. After a year on the shelf, the stud defensive end finally got to make his 2022 debut against the San Francisco 49ers.

The former Defensive Player of the Year played very well.

The Plan

The official word was that Young would be on a short leash last week. That he would play somewhere in the neighborhood of 16 snaps. After all, a torn ACL and patellar tendon is a very serious injury. One that can have career-shortening ramifications if not careful.

Washington Waste Opportunities And Fall 33-22 At Fed Ex

The Washington Football Team didn’t put a very good foot forward at Fed Ex Field on Sunday. In a game where they certainly had some opportunities,  they were ultimately spanked by the New Orleans Saints 33-22.

Early on it looked like Washington’s defense might finally catch fire, when Colt Holcomb intercepted Jameis Winston on the Saints very first drive. The WFT couldn’t capitalize fully on the turnover but did manage a Dustin Hopkins field goal to take an early 3-0 lead.

Wallpaper Wednesday: 2021 Schedule Wallpapers

My apologies for the “late” nature of these schedule wallpapers, but I was offline for an extended period. The original plan was to post these weekly for a few weeks leading up to the season. Due to their tardy nature, I am posting them all today.

It is a long tradition at THN dating back to the early 2000’s for us to create schedule wallpapers for the season. This year, most of the wallpapers posted on Wallpaper Wednesday were created for mobile devices and at 1080×1920 resolution.

Enjoy! And share!
