Wallpaper Wednesday: Flight Marshalls – The Redskins Secondary

This week’s wallpaper Wednesday recognizes the group of guys holding down the Redskins’ secondary in 2017.

Until this past Sunday, that group consisted of Bashaud Breeland, Josh Norman, Montae Nicholson and DJ Swearinger; but following the return of the venerable DeAngelo Hall, it was impossible to leave him out. What a gritty performance from the 14 year veteran to come back from a torn ACL and not only start the game, not only finish the game, but actually be the one who made the very last – game saving – play by the Redskins defense. Kudos to Hall.

Early in the season, Swearinger dubbed the unit the Flight Marshalls:

Wallpaper Wednesday: Josh Norman – The Dark Knight Returns

It’s Wallpaper Wednesday, and a banged up Redskins roster got a bit of good news yesterday, that cornerback Josh Norman would be returning to practice.

Norman fractured a rib and punctured a lung in Week 4.

Being cleared to practice doesn’t ensure that he will play against the Cowboys this week, but it certainly broadens the possibility. And with Dez Bryant on the docket, the Redskins secondary could use the help. The Redskins defense has allowed 378 yards per game in Norman’s absence.

Banged Up Redskins Secondary To Face Tough Eagles Offense In Critical Match Up

Week Seven could be a make-or-break week for the Washington Redskins’ 2017 Playoff aspirations. Every game is important in a 16-game season – every divisional game even more so. When you’re facing the only team ahead of you in the divisional race, and losing gives them both wins this season and the first tie breaker, it’s pretty safe to say that the Redskins hopes for winning the NFC East this year could very well come down to the result of this early week 7 game. Beating the Eagles won’t guarantee them success, but losing to them could drastically affect the Redskins betting odds of getting to the playoffs via a divisional first place.

That’s no small feat given that the game will be played at Lincoln Financial Field, and the Redskins secondary could potentially have more holes than swiss cheese.

Redskins Injury Situation Reached Near Comical Proportions Against Chiefs

The Redskins suffered a tough loss to the Chiefs on Monday Night, and given the ridiculous injuries that piled up, it isn’t that hard to understand why a Washington defense that was stuffing Kansas City – suddenly couldn’t.

While there have been mentions of the injuries in many articles, few seem to talk about the collective effect that these injuries had. There were so many that it was hard to follow. Several players went down – only to return; making it even harder to follow.

I have to admit, even though I am used to the fickle nature of NFL fandom, I was quite surprised at the number of people in the twitterverse that were throwing the Redskins under the bus for losing the Monday night game. Not because they lost to a good NFL team – but for failing to recognize some very glaring NFL game facts. Like the injuries the Redskins had to contend with.

I’m just going to take a quick look at the defense and point a few things out. I grabbed the Redskins depth chart from ESPN, and then started making a few annotations. Here is what I came up with.

Luckless Loss to the Lions

Rough Monday huh? Well that’s what happens when you lose a close game late. You get days like today, days spent licking wounds and asking what if? These are the types of bad days that you get when a team that has emerged as a contender loses a game that went down to the wire. Make no mistake, this is not a loss like in 2013 when we let the Lions snap their 0-21 losing streak. This was a loss to a respectable football club that came into their house with a winning streak of their own. A team that has a strong quarterback and a solid corps of receivers. A team that is good enough to win close games. A team that will punish you for being careless.

Will The Redskins Repeat As NFC East Champions?

With a completely irrelevant preseason game now under their belt, it seemed a perfectly “poke the bear” time to ask the question…

The Washington Redskins shocked a large portion of the NFL world in 2015, rattling off nine victories en route to winning the NFC East. They will look to build upon that performance during the 2016 campaign, and while the NFC East won’t be as easy to run away with, things at least look good on the improvement front.
