Many people, especially the pundits, seem reluctant to consider the notion that Scot McCloughan thought each guy he drafted was the best football player available, regardless of position, at the time he was selected.

I think that’s exactly what he thought and here’s why.

Track Record

First of all, his track record says so. Scot has consistently picked guys that did not fill an immediate need. For example, he inherited a solid TE in San Francisco, picked two more in his first draft there, then used the 6th overall pick the following year on a 6’ 3” 250 pound TE named Vernon Davis. I’m not sure how may TEs have been picked so early in the history of the draft but I am sure the number is small and may even be one. Preston Smith was the name Washington called with the 38th overall pick. The Defensive End from Mississippi State was one of this year’s NFL Combine super-risers. He showed great athletecism, and that’s likely what was so attractive to the Redskins.

Smith isn’t the prototypical edge rusher. He will beat guys with power, not speed. He’s also versatile enough to drop off into coverage and fill multiple roles along the evolving Defensive front. The Redskins have traded their 3rd Round draft pick to the Seattle Seahawks. In return for the 69th overall pick, Washington will get the 95th, 112th, 167th and 181st picks.

In my best Foghorn Leghorn voice…

“I say, I say, well that’s a helluva deal Mr. McCloughan.”

The Redskins took another step in re-building their secondary today, and signed former Seattle Seahawks safety Jeron Johnson. He was with the Seahawks from 2011 until 2014, and backed up Pro Bowl strong safety Kam Chancellor.

Johnson tweeted the news early Monday afternoon, and the NFL’s Ian Rapoport confirmed and tweeted out the details of the deal – two years, $4 million.

The Redskins have signed cornerback Chris Culliver to a four year deal.

Four signings, four defensive players – the message is clear.

Apparently Scot McCloughan’s first order of business was to re-build the Redskins previously unremarkable defensive front. The new General Manager made his third substantial move at the position on Thursday – perhaps his most substantial one.

It didn’t take Scot McCloughan long to establish that he’s going to be making some changes around these parts. After signing Ricky Jean-Francois early yesterday, he also cut veterans Stephen Bowen and Barry Cofield.

The two defensive linemen shared some commonalities – they both came to the Redskins four years ago – they both only played in eight games last year – and both were projected cap casualties with high bills of service for the upcoming season.  Read more... The new Redskins General Manager Scot McCloughan wasted little time in getting active in free agency, by signing former Indianapolis Colts defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois. The deal is reportedly a 3 year deal worth $9 million with $4 million guaranteed; but could be worth as much as $11.25 million with incentives, according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Francois was released by the Colts on Monday, and the Redskins, 49ers, and Seahawks were rumoured to be interested. The 49ers actually drafted him   originally, but it was McCloughan who was the GM in San Francisco at the time. It was actually the last draft selection he made there.  Read more...
