Previewing the Washington Commanders 2023 NFL Season Opponents
By Mark Solway | May 8th, 2023
The Washington Commanders are gearing up for the 2023 NFL season, and fans are already buzzing with anticipation. Sure some of of the buzz is wether or not Dan Snyder will have sold the team by then, but hey buzz is buzz.
The 2023 NFL Draft is in the books – the Commanders have made their selections – and that means that the next event to look forward to in the off-season is the release of the 2023 schedule. It will be released some time in May. Exactly when, is more top secret than how they get the caramel in the Caramilk bar.
The Commanders DO already know who their opponents will be – it’s just a question of when they will meet each opponent.
This will be the third year of the NFL playing the new 17-game format. The 17th game is against a non-conference opponent from a division that the team is not scheduled to play, and the match-ups are based on the division rankings from the season before. Under the new format, teams alternate between eight and nine home games each season. Washington will have eight games at home this year, after having nine last year.

2023 Opponents
They will of course play their six standard NFC East division games – three at home and three on the road – against the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, and Dallas Cowboys.
They will also play against the AFC East – the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and New England Patriots.
Additionally they will play against the NFC West this year – so the Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams, and the Seattle Seahawks.
They will also play against the AFC West Denver Broncos, the NFC South Atlanta Falcons, and the NFC North Chicago Bears.
The exact schedule for these games will be released in some time in May.

Match-up Questions
There are some tough games in the schedule, like the Bills, and the 49ers. Plus, it doesn’t get much tougher than playing the division rival Eagles and Cowboys twice each.
Can the Rams bounce back and play like the Super Bowl victors of 2021, or will it be the 2022 Rams that show up again?
A couple of games were made considerably tougher by offseason changes. For example, the Jets game was made infinitely more difficult with their acquisition of Aaron Rodgers.
Can Sean Payton wake up Russell Wilson and bring the Broncos back to life?
What remains to be seen, is will the Commanders be able to finally get a full season out of a single quarterback, and ride Sam Howell into the playoffs?
