Today’s wallpaper is Washington’s Super Bowl rings!!

Sometimes after a tough loss, it’s hard to pay tribute to one of the current players. It seems more sensible to pay homage to the past. In this case – to the Redskins three Super Bowl victories.

If you need to be reminded, Washington won Super Bowl XVII, Super Bowl XXII, and Super Bowl XXVI.

Super Bowl XVII

Washington’s first Super Bowl victory came on January 30th, 1983 in Pasadena California. It was the source of what is considered by most Redskin fans to be the greatest play in franchise history – The Riggo Run.

Riggo’s 43-yard run on the Chip 70 was and is, the stuff of legends. Riggins shrugged off Dolphins’ cornerback Ron McNeal and took off down the sidelines. Washington never looked back and beat the Miami Dolphins 27-17 to earn their first Lombardi trophy.

The Diesel finished the game with 166 yards on a whopping 38 carries and was deservedly named the game’s MVP.

Super Bowl XXII

The second Super Bowl in Redskins history took place on January 31, 1988 in San Diego, California at Jack Murphy Stadium. It contained the greatest quarter of football ever played in the NFL, and would come to be known as just, “The Quarter.” The Denver Broncos never knew what hit them.

Doug Williams and Washington scored 35 points in the second quarter. On the first touchdown, Ricky Sanders caught the ball on the Washington 48-yard line and took it all the way to the end zone, for a 1 play, 80-yard touchdown drive. Then Williams hit Gary Clark for a 27-yard touchdown strike. Then it was a 58-yard touchdown run by Timmy Smith. That was followed by Sanders’ second of the quarter –  this time a 50-yard touchdown reception. Clint Didier finished off the historic quarter with an 8-yard pass from Williams.

Washington added a touchdown in the 4th quarter to complete the 42-10 thumping of John Elway and the Broncos. Williams was named the game’s MVP, but Ricky Sanders could just as easily have won. He set several records that still stand today, including 193 yards receiving.

Super Bowl XXVI

On January 26th, 1992, Washington won their third Super Bowl under Joe Gibbs with a 37-24 dismantling of the Buffalo Bills. Despite the superlatives posted above about the first two Super Bowl victories – this was the greatest Washington Redskins team ever. In fact, it might be the most complete NFL team ever put together.

The score isn’t even indicative of the game. Buffalo tried to get back into the game but Washington was just coasting in the 4th quarter. Mark Rypien and The Hogs had jumped out to a 31-10 lead after three, and weren’t looking back.

Rypien had 292 yards and 2 touchdowns and was named the game’s MVP. But the game was a microcasm of the entire season – it was an entire team effort. Gary Clark and Art Monk both had 7 catches each, for 114 and 113 yards respectively. Ricky Ervins and Ernest Byner split 81 yards rushing but let Gerald Riggs cap off drives with 2 touchdown runs.

It was a selfless team, and they were the sum of all their parts and quite frankly, they were absolute poetry to watch. There hadn’t been any team as well balanced up until that point, and there probably hasn’t been since. Or ever will be.
